Practical advice from our team for travelling in Egypt
Book ahead
Peak season (Oct?Apr) sells out. Nile cruises and Abu Simbel trips especially?book 2?3 months early. Last-minute is possible but fewer choices.
Visa
Most nationalities need a visa. E-visa online before travel, or visa on arrival at Cairo, Hurghada, Luxor, Sharm. Valid passport (6+ months).
Travel insurance
We strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance covering medical emergencies and trip cancellations.
What to wear
Light cotton, linen. Temples and mosques: shoulders and knees covered. Comfortable shoes?you?ll walk a lot at Karnak, Giza, Abu Simbel. Evenings can be cool; bring a light layer.
Essentials to pack
Sunscreen, hat, comfortable walking shoes, reusable water bottle, and a small daypack for tours.
Water & sun
Bottled water only. Sun is strong?hat, sunscreen, and shade breaks. Guides carry extra water on desert trips.
Respect local customs
Dress modestly at religious sites. Ask permission before photographing locals.
Bargaining
Normal at Khan El Khalili and bazaars. Know roughly what you?d pay, haggle politely. Walk away if the price isn?t right.
Egyptian pounds & tips
Keep some EGP for toilets, small buys, tips. ATMs at airports and in cities. Tips for guides and drivers are optional but appreciated?usually 50?100 EGP for a day tour.
